Title: Criminalist

NATURE OF WORK

Applies scientific principles, section protocols, and utilizes specialized instrumentation to analyze and examine firearms and firearm related evidence: function testing of firearms, bullet and cartridge case examinations to establish identification, GSR examinations and muzzle to target distance determinations, serial number restoration, and may be required to respond to crimes scenes to conduct shooting incident reconstruction.  Criminalist in the Firearms and Toolmark section conduct toolmark examinations, footwear and tire track examinations, and physical matches.  Criminalists must prepare written reports of findings and testify in court as expert witnesses.  Criminalists are responsible for ensuring the integrity of evidence by using established handling protocols.  In the performance of their duties, Criminalist will be exposed to hazardous material, elevated noise levels and decomposing corpses, body fluids, and contagious diseases.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Must possess a degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in a physical science, Criminalistics, Criminal Justice Administration and Industrial Technology with a background or education in Trace Evidence or Forensic Firearms and Examinations.  Applicants will be required to go through a background investigation, polygraph examination, and must establish residency in Kansas City, Missouri within nine months of being hired.
