New High Speed Digital Camera (members only)- A new high speed digital video camera is available that can capture up to 10,000 frames per second.  An example of the camera's capabilities is being provided to AFTE members.  [Click Here]

 

Meeting Announcement- The American Academy of Forensic Scientists will be holding their annual meeting February 17-22, 2003.  The AAFS meeting will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, in Chicago, Illinois.  Volunteers will be needed to do an array of administrative and gate keeping tasks.  For additional information visit the academy website at www.aafs.org or contact Dr. R. Ethics Enforcement Procedures- The Procedures for the Enforcement of the AFTE Code of Ethics are now available for review [Click Here].  Any person, whether an AFTE member or not, who believes that an AFTE member has violated the AFTE Code of Ethics is encouraged to file a complaint with the President of the Association.  It is requested that you carefully review the Code of Ethics and the Enforcement Procedures prior to filing. - Robert J. Sound of Bullets- As previously reported, the AFTE Journal OCR Committee is hard at work bringing the many articles from past AFTE Journals to the website.   In 2001 AFTE member Lucien Haag presented to the attendees of that year's annual training seminar a very interesting research project titled, "The Sound of Bullets".  An article detailing this research project was recently published in the Summer 2002 AFTE Journal.  For a limited time Mr. Haag's article is being made available to the public as an example of the quality material routinely found in the AFTE Journal.  As a bonus several audio files have been submitted for inclusion in the article. Arthur R. Paholke- It is with deep regret that we have to inform members of the passing of one of the founding fathers of AFTE and our 4th President, Arthur R. Paholke.  Art was recuperating from a stroke when he suffered a fatal heart attack.  To view Art's Obituary that appears in the Chicago Tribune click here.  The Tribune also has a Guestbook that friends and family can use to post condolences.  To view the Guestbook click hereThe family has requested that any donations made in Art's memory go to one of two Hot Springs, Arkansas organizations: Knights of Columbus (through St. John's Catholic Church) or the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge Number 26.

48 Hours/CBS- AFTE member Bob Hathaway of the Rhode Island State Crime Laboratory is scheduled to appear on 48 Hours this Friday night (10/11/02).  Bob is to be interviewed in a story about the sniper-style shootings that are occurring in the Maryland/Washington D.C. area.

AFTE Journal Articles-Now Online!!- I am pleased to announce that AFTE's new ad-hoc Journal OCR Committee is in the process of posting to our web site all of the scientific articles from over 30 years of AFTE Journals and Newsletters.  Mike Haag, his committee, and our Webmaster Scott Doyle are currently chipping away at a formidable mountain of printed information.  Once this task is completed, AFTE members will be able to access every scientific article published by AFTE.  Click here to access the articles that have been completed to date.  Additionally, if you wish to volunteer in this effort please contact Mike Haag at .  I am sure that any and all help would be appreciated.  - Robert J. AFTE 2002 Training Seminar- The 33rd. AFTE Training Seminar was held last week in San Antonio, Texas.  Excellent papers were presented throughout the week and the Host Committee Jamie Becker, Ed Love and Ed Wallace put together great activities for members and guests.  Introduced at the banquet Thursday night was AFTE's newest President, Bob Shem (seen at right).  Awards were presented to several members and the raffle at the end of the night resulted in some very happy winners.  For more information about the AFTE Training Seminar... Buddy Can You Spare A Dime? - We solicit ammunition from our user (police) agencies and 99% of the time it is normal run-of-the-mill ammunition. But once in a while there comes along something quite unique.  The following photographs are of a rather unique reloaded shotshell, which first got my attention by the deformation in the crimp.
